Congrats to all of my family and friends who worked so hard in California on Prop 8! I found these words from a talk given by Neal A. Maxwell back in February 1979. His words let me know without a doubt that our Prophet, the Twelve Apostles, and the Seventy are truly inspired men who receive revelation. Almost thirty years ago it was almost as if he were speaking of this very event.
“Make no mistake about it, brothers and sisters, in the months and years ahead, events are likely to require each member to decide whether or not he will follow the First Presidency. Members will find it more difficult to halt longer between two opinions. President Marion G. Romney said, many years ago, that he had 'never hesitated to follow the counsel of the Authorities of the Church even though it crossed my social, professional or political life.'
“This is hard doctrine, but it is particularly vital doctrine in a society which is becoming more wicked. In short, brothers and sisters, not being ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ includes not being ashamed of the prophets of Jesus Christ. . . . Your discipleship may see the time when such religious convictions are discounted. . . . This new irreligious imperialism seeks to disallow certain opinions simply because those opinions grow out of religious convictions.
“Resistance to abortion will be seen as primitive. Concern over the institution of the family will be viewed as untrendy and unenlightened....Before the ultimate victory of the forces of righteousness, some skirmishes will be lost. Even in these, however, let us leave a record so that the choices are clear, letting others do as they will in the face of prophetic counsel. There will also be times, happily, when a minor defeat seems probable, but others will step forward, having been rallied to rightness by what we do. We will know the joy, on occasion, of having awakened a slumbering majority of the decent people of all races and creeds which was, till then, unconscious of itself. Jesus said that when the fig trees put forth their leaves, 'summer is nigh.' Thus warned that summer is upon us, let us not then complain of the heat." (Neal A. Maxwell, "A More Determined Discipleship," Ensign, Feb 1979, 69-73)

Wow, that really is an incredible look into the future!
I am so glad that you posted this and that I read it tonight. My mind has been on the recent news of riots against the church. Somehow these words create a sense of courage to stand behind our convictions AND our leaders, especially because they are inspired from on high. Faithful UNITY is powerful...
Wow what a powerful talk. We really do need to stand for what we believe and what we know is right. Times are getting scarier and scarier, but these words bring so much comfort. Thanks for sharing!
I'm so glad you found this talk Dawn! We are so blessed to have a true prophet of God on the earth today. I've found it true where I work, with people outside of our faith, who find us "unenlightened" or "primitive" for doing things based on religious convictions. Thank you for posting this- it feels like he wrote this for us today!
Love it! Thanks for that!

Thanks for the link Janee. However, I still choose to follow the prophet, all twelve of the Apostles, and the Seventy over main stream media and their one-sided comments. I too have prayed about this and without a doubt know that this is what the Lord wants us to do, defend the definition of marriage. No matter what is thrown at me, my testimony will not change on the matter.
We just had our Stake Conference last week and Brother Bednar attended. He said that even just 13 or 14 years ago when The Proclamation on the Family was given people said "duh, isn't this what the church has always been about? Marriage, family, et. Why are you saying this now." Well, lo and behold the Proclaimation states that the family is centered around marriage between a man and a woman and today, we can all of a sudden see that the Prophet had forseen that this would become a problem. Seemed like such a simple Proclaimation at the time, but the Prophet knew that others would challenge it.
